Alicia Vikander Had the Busiest September in Show Business

Most actors get one big release a year and call it a season. Alicia Vikander had two in the space of a single week last month, on two different continents, in two completely different registers. One of them is a competition title at the Venice Film Festival built on Bernardo Bertolucci’s final screenplay. The other is a South Korean monster movie where she plays an alien alongside her actual husband. This is what a hot streak looks like.

The Venice coup: “The Echo Chamber”

On September 6, Vikander arrived by boat in Venice for the world premiere of The Echo Chamber, which played in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival as one of 21 films vying for the Golden Lion. That alone would make it the most prestigious stop of her year. The backstory makes it even bigger: the film’s screenplay is the last one written by Bernardo Bertolucci before his death in 2018, completed by Ilaria Bernardini and Ludovica Rampoldi and directed by Italian filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro.

Vikander plays Anne opposite Luca Marinelli as Leo and Susan Sarandon as Ava in a romantic drama that had its Italian theatrical release on September 10 through 01 Distribution. It is an Italy-Belgium co-production, 123 minutes, English-language, and comfortably the most arthouse thing she has done since The Danish Girl won her the Oscar a decade ago.

Her husband came along, too. Michael Fassbender walked the Venice red carpet with her on September 6, one of those rare joint appearances the couple almost never does. The two met in 2014 filming The Light Between Oceans and married in October 2017. They keep their family life fiercely private, so a Venice red carpet in matching formal wear is basically a public event in the Vikander-Fassbender calendar.

Then, three days later: aliens

While the Venice premiere was still generating coverage, Vikander’s other September film hit American theaters. Hope, the long-awaited sci-fi thriller from South Korean director Na Hong-jin (his first feature since 2016’s The Wailing), opened nationwide in the US on September 9 after a premium early-access event on September 7 across 175 locations.

Here is the twist nobody saw coming: Vikander and Fassbender both play aliens in it. The film is set in a cut-off village near the Korean demilitarized zone, where forest fires rage, reinforcements never come, and mysterious creatures turn a hunting party into the hunted. This is the couple’s first film together since they married in 2017, and according to Swedish press coverage, Vikander has said she knew from the start exactly what kind of creature she would be playing. The film had already premiered in competition at Cannes back in May and drawn big crowds in South Korea before Neon’s US rollout.

So to recap one month: a Golden Lion competition premiere from a legendary dead auteur’s final script, plus the first feature in ten years from the director of The Wailing, co-starring her husband as an alien. Most people’s entire careers do not contain a month like that.

Why this one matters for Sweden

Vikander remains, alongside the Skarsgård clan, the single biggest Swedish export in acting, and there is a difference between her and most of them: she picks like a curator. Between the monster movie and the Bertolucci project, she is now working with major auteurs on three continents while most Hollywood stars her age are signing three-picture franchise deals.

There is also a quieter Swedish angle to Hope. Na Hong-jin’s film got heavy coverage in the Swedish press specifically because of the Vikander connection, and it is the rare blockbuster-scale release where a Swedish actor is one of the two names above the title. Whatever happens at the box office, September 2026 will be remembered as the month Alicia Vikander went from reliable Oscar winner to the most interesting actor on the planet. Again.
