Bill Skarsgård spent a decade becoming the defining horror face of his generation. Now he is doing something nobody predicted: headlining a video game espionage epic from Hideo Kojima, the most famous auteur in gaming. The announcement landed during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show broadcast on September 17, 2026, and it is the kind of crossover casting that only makes sense once you see it.

The PHYSINT bombshell
Kojima Productions confirmed that Skarsgård will portray the lead role in PHYSINT, the studio’s upcoming action-espionage project that Kojima himself has described as the culmination of his 40-year career as a game creator. The project was originally introduced as Kojima’s return to PlayStation-style espionage, but Sony reportedly stepped away earlier this year, and Xbox swooped in to publish. That makes Skarsgård the face of one of the strangest high-profile platform shifts in gaming history.
Kojima announced the casting himself and framed it as mutual admiration rather than a standard industry deal. “I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård,” he said in a statement released via Xbox. “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”
The “Charlee” is Charlee Fraser, who appears alongside Skarsgård on the new poster that Kojima personally photographed. Don Lee and Minami Hamabe round out the announced cast. The poster was shot after costume fittings and camera tests conducted earlier this year, and it gives the first real look at Skarsgård in character. No release date or platform lineup was announced, so fans will be waiting a while. But the casting alone made it the story of Tokyo Game Show week.
Trading terror for the trenches
The Kojima news was not even Skarsgård’s only September headline. On September 9, Netflix released the first trailer for The Mosquito Bowl, a World War II epic from director Peter Berg in which Skarsgård trades the supernatural dread he is famous for for the grounded nightmare of the battlefield.

And 2026 has already been kind to him in theaters. He drew rave reviews for his performance in Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire. Earlier this year he co-starred with Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer in Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood, and he is set to star in Andrew Niccol’s Lords of War opposite Nicolas Cage.
The horror king’s second act
Let us put the run in perspective. Since breaking out as Pennywise in It (2017), Skarsgård has stacked Barbarian, Nosferatu, John Wick: Chapter 4, The Crow, and Boy Kills World. That would be a career for most actors. Instead he is using horror stardom as a launchpad into war epics, Van Sant indies, and now the most cinematic corner of the gaming world.
Pennywise is not done with him either
Through all of this, horror keeps pulling him back, and he keeps saying yes. He reprised Pennywise for HBO’s prequel series IT: Welcome to Derry, returning to the role that made him famous nearly a decade after the 2017 film. Few actors get to define a horror icon twice.
Kojima has a track record of turning actors into permanent fixtures of gaming’s visual identity. If PHYSINT lives up to the hype, Bill Skarsgård’s face could end up as recognizable to a generation of players as Pennywise was to horror fans. Not bad for the kid who grew up in the shadow of Alexander and Stellan.
